Everyone who loves surfing, loves escaping for a surf holiday in gorgeous weather.  Whether it's surfing in board shorts, or having perfect waves for you rolling in everyday, getting to spend a week or two on a beach can be just what we all need. So if you have decided you are going on a surf holiday, but don't know where to go, take a look at our top tips to get you ready and set to go:

  • 1- Surf Ability

Think about what you want to get out of your holiday before setting off a blazing trail to an infamous wave like Teahupoo, Tahiti.  Yes, everyone may have heard of the wave, but very few of us mere mortals are able to surf it.  So if you want to have a holiday in Tahiti, go for it, but don't expect to surf it.

Instead, think about what level of surfing you already have.  If you're a beginner, look at destinations such as Lagos or Ericeira in Portugal, as they have great beginner surf beaches within walking distance of the town.  They are also close to more intermediate and advanced waves for those of us who want to progress, or get inspired.  It's all about being realistic for yourself, then you'll achieve more and enjoy yourself more.

  • 2- Season

When living in more northerly Europe we all know how much we miss the sun over the winter months, and crave a dose of hot weather and warm(er) waves.  Going on a surf holiday, whether it's for a surf camp or to explore new surf spots, is a great excuse to get some much needed solar rays.  So choose your surf holiday by what you feel you need... if it's sunshine in the middle of winter- think Fuerteventura, better waves in summer- head to Portugal, or simply a break in autumn- go to France or Spain.

  • 3- Accommodation

The one thing that can make or break a surf holiday, is where you stay.  Planning ahead a little and choosing an accommodation that is suited to you is essential.  Think about who you're travelling with, whether you like self catered apartments or full board hotels, and how close you want to be to the surf.

Solo and group travellers can get great rates at places like the Surf House Experience in Lagos, where it's easy to make friends and take part in the surf lessons.  For couples or families, the Ecolodges in Ericeira are a relaxed holiday destination, close to the surf and to the town centre for day trips or evenings out.
