Las Avellanas complex has exclusively five equipped villas and is personally run by its owners. Our vision combines the simple beach life with the comforts of everyday life. Each villa is a 50 to square meter dwelling of balanced construction to inner gardens and outdoor hammocks.

Built with materials such as reforested wood, cement, and glass, each villa is a small oasis where every detail was planned to provide tranquility for our guests.
Location
In Playa Avellanas, there are 6 different peaks close to each other with sand or lava reef seabed. They work with S, SW, W or N swells. Both the beachbreaks and the reefbreaks are pretty good.
The waves are playful most of the time and you will have great fun riding them. Ideal for manouvers or getting barreled in relatively mellow tubes. The sensation of being inside the tube with warm and crystal clear water and seeing the beautiful beach makes Avellanas the place you will never forget and the one you will always want to come back.

The norther Pacific side of Costa Rica is best know for its fun waves rather than epic 10 foot advanced surf!
Air temperature in the north is the same year round 32°C. The seasons are divided in two: dry Season from December to April and wet season from May to November. Dry season is the busiest time for tourism in Costa Rica and they call it their summer.
Tamarindo is a year round surf destinations. The bigger swell season is from April to October. From December to March you tend to get smaller but clean 4 foot waves and is probably the best time to go. Wind is not usually a big factor but as with most places the morning will be best for glassy offshore conditions.
Surf beaches around Tamarindo
The main surf beach in the area is Playa Grande, a very consistent long beautiful beach break for intermediates. La Casita across the estuary is a fast beach break. El Estero is the fast rivermouth, great for longboarder surfers.
Surfing Tamarindo beach itself is great for all levels with Pico Pequeno & Pico Grande for more advanced. Further south is Playa Langosta, rocky underneath the surface and offering fun waves. Playa Avellanas is the most stunning beach in the area and suits all standards. One of Costa Roca's best. Playa Negra further south is an excellent right hand reef break over crystal clear water.

Our hosts were very welcoming and hospitable. They answered all our questions about the area and gave us helpful advice on places to go. The villas are very comfortable and clean. And the architecture is very cool. The location was excellent and very close to our favorite beach in the area.

How did you like the accommodation?
My wife, son, and I really enjoyed our stay with Robert. He was there to greet us when we arrived and spent plenty of time showing us our quarters and hanging out to discuss the nearby surf breaks. Everything was very transparent and straightforward, and the place was exactly as I expected. I love staying at places like this as you get true local knowledge instead of the standard tourist treatment. The place is as convenient as it gets for the Avellanas surf breaks. While the usual beach access trail was inundated at the time of our visit other nearby options were fine. I would definitely stay there again.

How did you like the accommodation?
We stayed here for one month and it was excellent. The hosts Robert and Isabel were extremely helpful and accommodating! The wifi was great. The cleaner Karla was an angel. The surfing was awesome! We loved the contemporary design and private setting. This place is perfect for any length of stay in Avellanas!
How were the surf lessons?
At the beginning of our stay me and my girlfriend took 2 advanced surf lessons with Mauricio in order to prepare for our trip.
The surf coach Mauricio from Avellanas Surf School was very friendly and competent.
He helped us to refine our takeoff technique and he gave us also great tips on how to properly execute bottom turns and top turns.
What we really liked about Avellanas Surf School is, that you train in an individual lesson or a small group of max. 2 persons per coach, instead of training in a big group like other surf schools do.
This helped me to progress very fast, I caught a lot of waves and I learned a lot in only 2 sessions.

How did you like the accommodation?
Las Avellanas Villas is a great place to stay. The Villas are off the beaten path away from the hustle and bustle of other bigger towns in the area which gives you the true experience of a Costa Rican beach town. The beach is about a 10 to 15 minute walk to the beach but the walk is an enjoyable walk with monkeys and beautiful scenery along the way. Not only are Robert and Isabel very hospitable but also very knowledgeable about the surrounding area. I was there on a short surf trip and caught some fun waves at the river mouth and some good beach break more towards Lola's restaurant at a higher tide. The one thing I would recommend if staying here is to have a vehicle since there is not a lot of restaurants and or business in the area which actually adds to the charm of this place since it is not at all crowded. There is a shuttle service that does makes it rounds about every 2 hours to near by towns if you do not have a vehicle. Thumbs up for Las Avellanas Villas and I am already looking forward to my next stay.

Robert and Isabel were extraordinary hosts. Isabel had plenty of suggestions for food and activities . The villas are clean and cute . The outdoor deck is a great place to hang out at any time of day. The location is remote about a 10 minute drive from Tamarindo. Ideal place to relax and unwind. Beach:Lola beach and Playa Negra are the closet beaches to the villa. Food: Try the breakfast and dinner next door at Hotel Mauna Loa. And try the fish at Rest. Latino. Wild life: There are plenty of birds to watch . Lizards , iguanas and geckos. There are monkeys you probably won't see them but you can hear them at night.
