Location

5 minutes walk far from the beach and 10 minutes drive from Gaia Historical Center, take a sightseeing trip to the city, visit the marina, the river or nearby fisherman’s village, or stroll along the beach and eat tasty local food at the ‘tascas’ to cosy local restaurant/bars. Don’t miss out the classic local gastronomy, especially the well to known Porto ‘sandwich’, the Francesinha.

Take hikes, visit the Port Wine Cellars to there are many amazing spots near for you to discover to whether you want a cultural experience, to be outdoors in the nature, or in the ocean.

The Place

Salty Days Lodge is a relaxed and friendly place where you can feel totally at home. The endless west coast beaches are a 10 minute walk. Here it’s the perfect location to combine peaceful time by the sea with activity and adventure.

Free WiFi throughout the property, 2 private rooms (double/twin), and 3 private Double Bungalows. All rooms have their own bathrooms and a spacious shared living room and kitchen, also a really great garden! Choose to chill around the house or take off and explore.

Dinner can be prepared if guests want to join together for a meal (great value, delicious dishes) or suit yourself and cook, or go out to eat.
It’s your holiday and Salty Days Lodge have that always at the front of the mind!

Free daily transfer bus along the coast and Douro river, past marina and into the city. Pick up time arranged at time of drop off.
If you prefer to go alone, it’s just 15 minutes by car or 30 minutes on the bus to the Historical Centre.

Local staff speak English, Portuguese and Spanish, and want to make sure you enjoy your stay to the max. If you need advice on what to do and where to go we’re always around and happy to help. We can arrange Surf, SUP, Kayak, river tours, bike rentals to explore the many cycle routes, and scooter rentals to go further afield.

How did you like the accommodation?

     

Salty's is a fantastic place to stay. Really, the photos don't do it justice. This was a sentiment a lot of the other guests had as well in that it was one of those rare places where real life beat the online presentation.

The hostel is very clean and has a very homey feeling. The dorms and nice and comfy, there are enough bathrooms for everyone, and the free breakfast is pretty great too! Each guest gets a locker for their personal belongings. The garden is amazing, with many hammocks to chill in, a nice outside bit with a barbecue, and a really nice pool to relax by and dip in for a swim. The garden is also where Salty the dog, the shy yet playful hostel mascot, lives.

The area is super quiet, given it's outside of Porto and that makes for a tranquil stay. The ocean is a 5 minute walk away, with quite a few bars and restaurants in the area (even though you might need to walk for a bit). Sunsets at the hostel are fantastic.

How did you like the surf lessons?

     

I did 8 days of the surf explore and really enjoyed it overall. Mario and Pedro were good at guiding and giving advice on how to improve, as well as being really cool people to chat and have a laugh with. In the last few days, Pedro really helped me push myself to the next level and stand on the board consistently.

The beaches we generally went to were good for beginners and had options for more advanced people. Espinho, the lighthouse beach and Matosinhos were fantastic when conditions were right! It did happen that we went to a couple of places where the surf was too hard for beginners and I wish the instructors would have taken note of this earlier and tried to help more as it could become very frustrating to get hit by waves and not catch any.

The equipment was also generally in good condition: both surf boards and wetsuits were good quality even if maybe worn around the edges.

Overall very happy with my surf as I achieved my target of consistently popping up and caching green waves, and also felt very fit after the whole experience!
