Playa Grande is a small surf town on the Pacific ocean where the Leatherback Turtles come to nest October to February. We are one hour from the Liberia International Airport and five hours from the San Jose International Airport.
Renowned among surfers for its consistency and good mix of lefts and rights, Playa Grande is nestled within a beautiful crescent bay and known for its surf and sun. Our hotel is just a short walk to the main surf break. Playa Grande’s beach barrels hard and fast when the winds blow off shore. In addition to being steps from one of the most consistent surf spots in Central America, Rip Jack Inn is within driving distance to other surf breaks.
One of the most famous surf spots in Costa Rica is Playa Tamarindo, which is just across the estuary to the south. People can walk to the mouth of the estuary and paddle over or catch a water taxi. Surfers with a car can drive around the estuary to surf Tamarindo. The wave at Tamarindo is slightly easier than Playa Grande, and the line up is typically more crowded.
Playa Avellanas is a 45 minute drive from Playa Grande, and given the right swell and wind conditions, this place can really go off. Surfers have three breaks to choose from: the beach access, the river mouth, and the rocky point break, Little Hawaii.
Further south is Playa Negra with waves that suit more experienced surfers. This reef break is famous for its fast, hollow barrels.
RipJack Inn is a family owned and operated boutique hotel located just 50 meters off the three mile pristine white sand beach of Playa Grande. While the main surf break is directly out front there are several other breaks you can walk to within ten minutes. The hotel has two swimming pools, a beautiful teak wood yoga shala and a tree top restaurant that serves some of the best food in the country!
The hotel has 6 basic standard rooms, 12 deluxe rooms, a bungalow and two large family suites. Designed to accommodate the surfer at all stages of life whether traveling on a budget with their buddies or bringing along the entire family.
We partner with Frijoles Locos surf shop to provide surf lessons for all levels, guided surf trips, boat trips to Witch's Rock and Ollie's point and all the equipment you need to rent or buy.

Playa Grande
Level: All Levels
Renowned among surfers for its consistency and good mix of lefts and rights, Playa Grande is nestled within a beautiful crescent bay and known for its surf and sun. Our hotel is just a short walk to the main surf break. Playa Grande’s beach barrels hard and fast when the winds blow off shore. Playa Tamarindo
Level: All Levels
One of the most famous surf spots in Costa Rica is Playa Tamarindo, which is just across the estuary to the south. People can walk to the mouth of the estuary and paddle over or catch a water taxi. Surfers with a car can drive around the estuary to surf Tamarindo. The wave at Tamarindo is slightly easier than Playa Grande, and the line up is typically more crowded.
Playa Langosta
Level: Intermediate
Playa Langosta is the next beach south of Tamarindo. The best waves can be found at the river mouth. Surfers staying in Playa Grande are encouraged to drive to Playa Langosta considering the distance. There's some rocks so be careful.
Playa Avellanas
Level: All Levels
Playa Avellanas is a 45 minute drive from Playa Grande, and given the right swell and wind conditions, this place can really go off. Surfers have three breaks to choose from: the beach access, the river mouth, and the rocky point break, Little Hawaii.
Playa Negra
Level: Advanced
The waves at Playa Negra are reserved for more experienced surfers. This reef break is famous for its fast, hollow barrels. Surfers from all over the world come to Costa Rica to catch this rocky right.
The norther Pacific side of Costa Rica is best know for its fun waves rather than epic 10 foot advanced surf!
Air temperature in the north is the same year round 32°C. The seasons are divided in two: dry Season from December to April and wet season from May to November. Dry season is the busiest time for tourism in Costa Rica and they call it their summer.
Tamarindo is a year round surf destinations. The bigger swell season is from April to October. From December to March you tend to get smaller but clean 4 foot waves and is probably the best time to go. Wind is not usually a big factor but as with most places the morning will be best for glassy offshore conditions.
Surf beaches around Tamarindo
The main surf beach in the area is Playa Grande, a very consistent long beautiful beach break for intermediates. La Casita across the estuary is a fast beach break. El Estero is the fast rivermouth, great for longboarder surfers.
Surfing Tamarindo beach itself is great for all levels with Pico Pequeno & Pico Grande for more advanced. Further south is Playa Langosta, rocky underneath the surface and offering fun waves. Playa Avellanas is the most stunning beach in the area and suits all standards. One of Costa Roca's best. Playa Negra further south is an excellent right hand reef break over crystal clear water.
That's just a few of the many ideal surf breaks you can experience when on a surfing vacation in Tamarindo. Come Surf with us...
