Location

Santa Teresa and Mal Pais are located on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica on the Nicoya Peninsula. The two small surf towns share a 6km stretch of beach and road. There are many restaurants, surf shops, and groceries. We are located near one of the best surf breaks in the country, Suck Rock.

Santa Teresa is where you can enjoy local shopping, a wide variety of international, as well as local Tico restaurants, and the chill vibe that represents the area perfectly. If you are wondering how you will get around, we can help figure out what works best for you. Why walk when you can rent bicycles or maybe you will need an all to terrain vehicle (ATV) to get around if you really want to explore the area. If you prefer, our staff can arrange to have a driver or shuttle service pick you up and take you from place to place–it’s okay–it’s your vacation.

Santa Teresa beach is a 5 to km expanse of beach where the jungle hugs the coastline. Although the town of Santa Teresa has grown significantly over the past ten years, local building laws have forbidden any beach construction and high to rise buildings leaving this Costa Rican paradise untouched and unspoiled. From the Blue Surf Sanctuary Hotel in Santa Teresa, you can walk either south or north to explore miles of coastline in paradise.

How did you like the accommodation?

Here we go. I booked all 4 bungalows on the property (total 9 and a baby) at the Blue Surf for my family vacation June 11-18 and it was perfect. Kelly the owner was great and answered all my questions before I booked and answered all my question even after I payed lol. The bungalows were beautiful the grounds/bungalows/furnishings/pool/and shared kitchen were fantastic and everything was super clean. The staff was wonderful. There is someone on premise everyday and security at night. We even had the housekeeper do our laundry 2x. Shout out to Jessie she was wonderful and helped us plan our excursions as we rented atv's and zip lining. Blue surf is located about a 2 minute walk to the beach, about 15 min walk to the food store but there was a great bistro on the corner for food/smoothies right next store. Everything about this hotel was great and I had to please a lot of people in my family with all different tastes and it worked out perfectly. I definitely would stay again. I did read some peoples reviews about noise with atvs at night but we didn't experience any of that. We were also there in the off season. And we had 2 cars and they had parking for both. And the wifi worked

How did you like the accommodation?

Once again we brought our whole family - three sons, two daughters-in-law, two granddaughters (3 & 1) - to Mal Pais for ten days of relaxation in paradise. We have always stayed at the Blue Surf Sanctuary (which is fantastic), but it was booked this year the week we could all travel. Laura suggested we stay at a property they had bought, a 5-bedroom house, a little further up the beach at Playa Hermosa. This worked perfectly.

The house is about a five minute walk from pristine, mostly deserted, Hermosa beach. There is a surf break there that our oldest son surfed most mornings and evenings. A few days he traveled in to the beach at Blue Surf Sanctuary, about 8 minutes by ATV, and found a little better breaks.

There is a decent-sized swimming pool that the little girls used often, with plenty of lounge chairs where you can sit and read your book under the trees and listen to the howler monkeys that occasionally make their way through the canopy. The rooms are well-air-conditioned. Two rooms are downstairs and open onto the pool area. The other three are upstairs. There is a large kitchen that is open to a big common room with a huge dinning table and a sofa. The common areas are fairly open to the pool and are not air-conditioned.

We go for my wife's June birthday, so this is the "wet" season. You can expect rain most days, but there is plenty of sun, typically in the morning. Often big storms roll in after sundown. Costa Rica is generally cooler in the wet season, although it is very humid. We understand that the winter months are dry and hot and the number of tourists is significantly higher. During the Wet or Green the roads are not very crowded until you get to the crossroads and the beaches are practically deserted. Some evenings there was no breeze and it was uncomfortably still and hot and humid in the common area. Together, playing cards and drinking fruity rum drinks, and coming from Houston and St. Augustine, FL, we were fine and you can always retreat to the A/C in your room. During the days there always seemed to be a breeze or clouds overhead.

Both the Sanctuary and the Blue Surf House are a fair distance from town. ATV's are a must as they handle the BUMPY road much better than even a good SUV. They are fun and make short ,half-day adventures further up the beach or back into the beautiful mountain valleys more likely. These can easily be rented. I think we paid $400 for each for 8 days.

We provisioned the kitchen and refrigerator with gallons of bottled water, finger food for the girls, fruit and chips. We also bought beer and rum and a lot of different fruit juices - all available from the "mini supers" that are spaced along the road into town. We did cook some meals in the kitchen and even grilled some fish that the boys caught on a fishing outing put together by Blue Surf.

Although some restaurants close down during the off-season, there are still many delicious places in town. The concierge on duty can point you in the right direction - they set up a beach-side meal at a great quasi-mexican grill for my wife's birthday. I can't remember the name, but the location, the food, and the mango/jalepeno margaritas - fantastic. Burger Rancho has the best french fries in the western hemisphere and Las Piedras is the place to go if you want to overdose on flame-grilled meat. But you have to drive to these places. You'll want an ATV.

Although we have come to take it for granted, I must mention the home-away-from-home feel that comes from the Blue Surf crew - personable, knowledgeable, right there if you need anything, but not in the way.

The Mal Pais region is not for those looking for a "resort" vacation with activities and a discotheque and drink service on the beach and cabana boys. There is no place to go after 10 pm, no shopping malls and no reason to bring anything other than swim suit, T shirts and flip flops. And, you have to want to get there. We fly into San Jose, rent a 4-wheel drive SUV, drive 1.5 - 2 hours to the ferry landing in Punta Arenas, chill on the ferry for about 90 minutes (snacks and drinks available for purchase) and then drive for about another 90 minutes or an hour to the crossroads at Santa Teresa and then another 20 minutes to Blue Surf House on a pretty bumpy road. But then you are there and civilization just peels away.

Actually, this year our sons made arrangements for a shuttle van to pick them up at the airport and drive them to the ferry and then another shuttle picked them up at the ferry landing and took them to the house. I drove the SUV and the girls. Since we were renting a bunch of ATV's anyway, we saved on just one rent car. I don't know what they paid, but it wasn't bad. If you are going to rent an ATV in Santa Teresa there is no reason to have a car there. Traveling with small kids may make renting a 4-wheel drive SUV a better deal.

Spanish is the language. Anyone that you'll need to communicate with at Blue Surf speaks English (and usually a third language)and many of the restaurants are owned and operated by expat Euros. But some of the more local places like the mini supers or the "sodas" which serve traditional "Tico" fare do not speak much English. They are patient and probably understand more English than you do Spanish and if you keep a smile on your face it's all good

Oh, bring cash. Some restaurants take plastic, but many places don't. We saved about 14% on the ATV's by paying in Colones. There is an ATM at the crossroads. A rough way to convert colones to dollars is to double the colones and divide by a thousand. So, 1 mil or 1,000 colones is about $2.

If you are looking for a getaway to an unspoiled paradise, beautiful beaches, world class surfing, jungle with real monkeys, and warm friendly locals - you cannot go wrong staying at either of the Blue Surf properties.
