The North Beaches
Sydney is a town whose waves are divided by being either north or south of the harbour, the latter getting a little more swell than the former.
The northern beaches offer a great selection of sheltered coves, beach breaks and point breaks for surfers of all levels. Some of the must-surf spots on this stretch of coastline include: Manly, Curl Curl, Dee Why and Narrabeen. These all have a selection of right and sometimes left hand point breaks that tend to work on a southeast to easterly swell direction. Try to get in the water early to take advantage of the favourable morning winds and if you can manage to get in a low tide you’ll be sure to find some hollow waves to duck under.
The South Beaches
This is the slightly wilder side of Sydney that can pick up, or at least handle slightly more swell. The Cronulla region of the south side is rich with a variety excellent reef breaks that love the bigger swells.
One of it’s hidden treasures is Shark Island, a fast barrelling right hand break that was once considered an option for boogie boarders only, but now surfers have begun to embrace this Australian version of pipeline that’s for the experienced riders only.
So when the swell hits, head south because you’ll be rewarded with all the set-ups you need to get a memorable surf underfoot. While the northern beaches provide great waves in east to north east swells from January through June the south side reef breaks will pump during the July months and onwards.
