East Coast & Bathsheba

The East coast tends to be more rugged than the calm West and the more developed South coast. It is home to small local fishing villages, unspoiled beaches, a tropical rainforest and the best surf in Barbados.

Half way along the East coastline is the fishing and surf village of Bathsheba. A great place for nature lovers and far away from the hussle and bussle of city living. The town is home to Barbados' most famous wave, Soup Bowl. Pro surfer Kelly Slater has put it in his top 3 waves in the world.

The area also has some great beginner and intermediate spots including Sandbank & Ragged not far south. Cruising around the East coast of the Island soaking up the scenery is a great way to spend a day. There is epic snorkelling & diving if you want a break from the surf. Or just chill out in the beach side cafes and chat to the friendly locals.

The east Coast of Barbados gets consistent swell year round and alongside the warm water and almost perfect climate, it's a no brainer when booking that next surf trip.

The best season for solid ground swell is from October to March but the rest of year still gets waves. The mornings are often glassy so get on it before the wind comes up.

Activities

Whether your looking for lazy days on a beach, a long walk across the sand, a safari tour, horse-riding, zip-lining, hiking, 4x4 trips or a closer look at the marine life, Barbados has you covered.
Depending on your budget you will find one amazing activity after another to fill your days. Along the East coast is Joe's River Tropical Rainforest, located on the outskirts of Bathsheba. It is 85 acres of woodland and rainforest.

The entire island is only 22kms wide and is very easily explored

Restaurants & Bars
The East Coast is a very chilled out area, not a single 3 story building exists. There are plenty of local restaurants and bars along the coastline. The South Coast is only a short 20-30 minutes away and this is where the main nightlife of the country is. There are a mix of surfers bars and then ultra chic upscale restaurants with diner jacket only policies. A great blend to suit all tastes!
Visas are not necessary for Barbados but a return or onward ticket is essential to get in. Barbados only has one main airport, It is located on the South coast of the island.

How to get to Bathsheba from Barbados' Main Airport

Private & Shared transfers - Share a taxi or mini bus with our shuttle bus partner here. Many of the accommodation options offer transfers that can be booked in the checkout.

Bus - Buses are a nice option to take you around the island but not great from the airport.

Taxi - From Barbados airport to Bathsheba. Approximate time 30 minutes. Cost $40.

Car Hire - We have a discount deal for car hire available on our here: https://www.surfholidays.com/carhire. Rent your car from the airport and drive up. It is not possible to rent a car from Bathsheba
Soup Bowl

Soup Bowl is the islands most famous waves. It almost always has waves and is great fun and can be epic on its day. When Kelly Slater is in town, this is where you'll find him!

There a few different take off spots which helps to thin out the crowd but the first peak gets busy anyway. It's a powerful, hollow wave so only paddle out if you know what your doing. Respect the locals, they are super friendly if you play the game. Watch out for the urchins on the inside and some of the sharper rocks.

Sandbank

About 10 minutes walk north you will find a much more mellow wave called Sandbank. This is ideal for intermediates.

Parlours

Another really good reef break but one that tends to be less crowded than Soup Bowl. It can hold a bigger swell and again is super consistent.

Tent Bay

When the swell is north head for tent bay which is an epic left hander that very rarely gets crowded. The wave itself breaks in front of the Atlantic hotel.

Ragged Point

Next down the line is ragged point which is much more user friendly. This is a fun, mellow beach break best surfed from mid to high tide.

Long Beach

Long beach can have some really fun waves and is a great go to spot on a daily basis. It can close out and be hard to read at times but always worth a mission.

Conset Point

This wave needs a massive north swell to break and therefore is hardly surfed.

The island is only 22kms across so there are plenty of other options to explore further South, West and North.
