Season
November - March is the dry season and has the most consistent surf.
Weligama is a perfect beginner and intermediate surf break. It is arguable the most consistent beach break on the South Coast.
Only a quick 4KM and ten minutes by tuk-tuk from Weligama is the idyllic Mirissa. A quiet stretch of beach that has turquoise and crystal clear waters on beaches fringed by palms.
Mirissa is an established stop-off for surfers, with two breaks at either end of the beach. There is a right-hander reef break near the rocks that doesn’t generate much power, that is great for those who are progressing on to reef. And an equally good left-hander close to the harbour.

Travelled solo
How did you like the accommodation?
The Surfer is an excellent place to stay at. Nice rooms and staff, super surf- and yoga- teachers. In the surf-packages there is breakfast and dinner included, which is perfect for travellers from far away (Europe for example) who maybe allready has spendt a lot of money on their flight-ticket.
The beach is nice and the waves close to the beach are absolutely brilliant for beginners to intermidiate surfers.
Weligama ”town”/village has not much to offer, but Gaulle is a small city/town near by, which is worth paying a visit.
How were the surf lessons?
The surf teachers were awesome. Super talanted and they really took time to make sure that each and every one improved their surfing. The beachen were great for surfing. Great waves.
