Fisherman's House
Reviews (2)
5 out of 5

Located in the heart of the historic center of Ericeira, The Fisherman's House, is thought of not only as a place to stay overnight, but also to give our travellers a different experience and contact with our village.

"Our home is one of the first and oldest houses in Ericeira, with the typical arquitecture from a fisherman's village, it has truly become a home away from home for those looking for an accommodating and familiar place to stay."

Location

The Fisherman's House is located by the "Praia dos Pescadores" which means Fisherman's beach. The 'South Beach' and 'North Beach' are only a few steps away so you don't have to waste time and money on transportation. The famous surf beach of 'Ribeira d'Ilhas' and 'Foz do Lizandro' are just 15 minutes away by bike and you can rent them in the street right behind our hostel.

How did you like the accommodation?

Possibly the warmest welcome I have ever received when I arrived at a hostel. Ana (the owner) is a friendly, bubbly person and I immediately felt like I had picked the right place to stay. If you have anything in particular you'd like to do, she'll have plenty of suggestions. It's ideally located, only 2 min walk to one beach and 5 minutes to another. Also a 2/3 minute walk into the town. Just downstairs is a bar, Adega, a nice spot for a beer or to chill. Ericeira is beautiful town, everyone is so friendly, and completely laid back!! Maybe it's all the surfing! I met some lovely people who introduced me to Sunset Bamboo, a must if you go to Ericeira. Delicious salads, wraps, smoothies etc... The beaches are beautiful, the people are so so friendly, delicious food, fun relaxed atmosphere, with lots to do if you want. While I was there, we went surfing, mountain biking and did some yoga. You won't want to leave if you go!!

How were the surf lessons?

I loved learning how to surf, it's fair to say I won't be a pro surfer but it was great fun learning. The instructors are patient, good humored and I always felt completely safe. The beach were was beautiful also..

Due to the natural conditions of its maritime coast, Ericeira has assumed itself as a privileged location for the practise of surf. The diversity of the waves that exist in the different beaches, along with their various degrees of difficulty, allows the practise of the sport for all levels of surfers, from begginers to professionals.

Season

Best time to go depends on your level above. July, August & September are the peak tourist months.

This is where you surf Europe's best coast line and let the fun begin. There are over 12 surf breaks along the Ericeira coast, with different options for all standards. With so much choice you'll feel like a kid in a sweet shop! The area was introduced in the Stormriders Surf Guide to Europe with the heading "Enter the Heartland".

World Surf Reserve
In 2011 it was awarded the title of 'World Surf Reserve', there are only 2 other places in the world that share the title: Santa Cruz, US and Manly, Australia.

If it is your first surfing holiday to Ericeira then head straight to Foz do Lizandro and Sao Juliao beaches south of town, they are perfect beginner and intermediate surf spots. Closer to town is Praia do Sul. Another great beginner beach breaks. All best at mid tide but surfable at high and low tide also.

For Intermediates you have the reliable and safe reef break Ribeira d'Ilhas, which host the WSL World qualifying series surf championships every year. And for the more adventurous you have the world class Coxos. That's just naming a few, there are too many surf breaks to mention here!

Don't forget to explore further up the coast - 25 minutes away is Santa Cruz and an hour away is Peniche, home to the World renowned Supertubos and host of the Rip Curl Pro since 2009. 30 minutes south of Lisbon is the Cascais coast with the famous Praia do Guincho surf beach. And when north winds are blowing you can venture further south towards Carcevelos beach and the other surf spots along the Lisbon coast.
