Biarritz lies in the centre of Europe's most epic surf coastline. Running from Seignosse/Hossegor & Capbreton to Hendaye on the French coast and into San Sebastian and Zarautz on the Spanish coast you will get to experience every kind of wave imaginable.
The flow of the Bay of Biscay means the water is warm up until the end of September, so wetsuits are optional!
The city has two main beaches, the Grand Plage and Cote des Basques. The Grand Plage is the town's beautiful chic beach overlooked by the casino and Hotel du Palais. It can produce some excellent hollow waves.
On the south side of town is La Côte des Basques, one of Europe's best beginner beaches and a perfect place to base yourself on a Biarritz surf holiday. The beach is more sheltered than most of the other beaches which means beginners and longboarders can enjoy really nice mellow rides. The beach continues south and has many surfable peaks.
Both beaches host different European and World surf contests, the highlight being the Biarritz Surf Festival in July.
A km north is Anglet's stretch of beaches. You check from the road above which spot is working - some great bodyboard spots also and numerous jetties help shape the banks.
A few kms south is Ilbarritz, great place to find some hidden spots. Keep exploring south and you will come across some great beginner spots like Hendaye, and for the more experienced the pointbreak Lafitenia (beside Quiksilvers European headquarters) and the reef breaks around Guethary such as Avalanche and Les Alcyons.
The famous Belharra big wave lies 2kms off the coast from nearby St.Jean de Luz. It was made famous in 2003 when locals shocked the world by riding its 66ft peak!

How did you like the accommodation?
Biarritz was a lovely town. We stayed in the old quarter in Hotel Marbella, just a short walk to the calm beach ( plage tranquille) which is perfect for little children although at times, there was rubbish in sea. We walked to the surf beach most days, spent day on beach but watch when full tide as no sand til about 4 hours post high water.
How were the surf lessons?
Surf was very good for learners and intermediate surfers - they all spoke some English. Jeremy in Vague Basque was really friendly and rental of 5 euro if you had done lessons with them was very competitive.

How did you like the accommodation?
We split the holiday between San Sebastian & Biarritz! We actually preferred Biarritz. I got a couple of surf session days in there and the weather was great so that may have helped.
Hotel Marbella was perfect. It was a ideal vacation

How did you like the accommodation?
Biarritz itself is a great town, though you need to watch where you go for beers. La Tireuse for example is a nice surfer's place but sells Belgium designer beers for €10 a pint!
The Red is a great local bar for watching rugby - it's the bar where Biarritz Olympic fans go and I was able to watch New Zealand v South Africa in the Championship at 09:30 on Saturday morning.
Ventilo Caffé and Bar Basque were also great hangouts, as well as Bar Jean and Cafe Jean in the Des Halles part of town. Bayonne is a must I would say for a dayout.
The Hotel was perfect, a nice cute place with very nice staff, location-wise it was great and the facilities are good
How were the surf lessons?
The surf school, and especially Jeremy there was absolutely brilliant - helpful, friendly and good fun - they even gave me a free board and wetsuit hire the day after my lessons finished.

Had a great time! Hotel suited us fine.Weather wasn't great the first few days (obviously you can't fix that ;)) but it was fine because we were in the water surfing anyways!

Lessons with David were great!

How did you like the accommodation?
Feedback was the location was superb. A stunning place with a perfect blend of french efficiency, chic and stunning food and wine mixed with the rustic charm of spain. People were friendly and welcoming.
Hotel: services were good with the staff helpful and friendly. Rooms were clean and sufficient.
Parking wasn't great. Despite putting a week long ticket on my car I still recieved a ticket from the traffic police....not sure why and now have to appeal for it to be dropped..all written to the transport ministry in french!
Despite all this- a stunning location which we will be revisiting soon
