This was our 4th visit back to Ericeira with surfholidays.com and it keeps getting better every year. We love the town (it’s so cute – not too touristy at all) and also the fab surf lessons and general chilled out atmosphere. We stayed in the Anna Margarida Villas for the first time and they were out of this world.
The photographs on the website really don’t do them justice at all! There are so many quirky little places to find, I don’t want to give too much away, but……. there is a secret staircase up to the top of the roof terrace (the 2 bedroom villa) which gives a lovely view of the pool and beach. There is also a little walkway up past the top BBQ area which brings you to a cute seating area (behind the hammocks) where you can sip a drink whilst watching the sun set over the sea….. There is also a hidden pathway to the left of that seating area where there is a hidden sun lounger perched overlooking the sea. I’m sure there are many more things we didn’t find on this trip too…..we’ll just have to come back again and find them I guess!
We were a group of 7 and we shared the 2x bed villa (shaped like a boat with its own moat!) and also the neighbouring 1x bed house which had a really quirky ceiling (sea & Pool view Villa). The boat villa was huge! The 1x bed we stayed in was just beautiful, it had a very quirky ceiling decoration and a shower made out of glass bricks which made you feel like you were showering outdoors (tucked inside a rock wall thankfully, so not exposed!). Then there is an honesty bar, free roaming peacocks, a lovely pool and (at least) 2 BBQ area’s.
The beach is a 2 minute walk down a few steps. We didn’t surf on that beach, but there were people out there most days. The Quicksilver surf shop opposite the villa’s was really good too. Aside from selling lots of surf related clothing / sunglasses etc, it also has a really cheap bar in it (great idea….!). We were walking on Friday night and noticed there was a live band playing in-store so we popped in…..it was a great night! It also has an area with huge mac computers which can be used and outside there is a balcony where you can order a drink or two and watch the local kids in the purpose built skate park (Ericeira has some pretty cool skate kids!). There was also a DJ box outside…. but we didn’t see that used whilst we were there.
We found the food and drink in Ericeira to be very cheap and we ate like kings for the week. Our favourite in-town restaurants were, Tik Tapas and Prim. But our favourite meal had to be the sushi which they serve down at the beach where the surf lessons are held (I think this is usually on a Thursday night). It’s the best sushi I’ve ever tasted. I would seriously consider booking a Thurs – Fri holiday next year just so we can have sushi twice during the holiday! It’s one not to miss (make sure too book up early at the Na Onda bar to reserve a place). If sushi isn’t to everyone’s taste, they also serve great pizza’s. If you like mojito’s, I’d recommend you try the local cocktail “caipirao” which is made with Beirao Liqueur, freshly squeezed limes and sugar (I think it contains sugar as it tastes quite sweet) – you won’t be disappointed. Ericeira town itself is lovely, a few little cute shops (although I never got to grips with the opening hours to be honest!)
The surf lessons and surf instructors are really good. The lessons are fun too, so even if you’re like me and inclined to spend more time falling off the board than surfing on it, you’ll enjoy yourself! The waves were too strong to surf on the main beginner beach for a couple of days during the week so the instructors packed the boards and wet-suits into a van and we all made our way over to Peniche beach instead. I was very impressed with that as otherwise we would not have got as much surfing done.
This was also the first year that we did not hire a car, we used the stop-and-go taxi’s (Renata) and it really did make such a difference. Renata is fantastic, we’ll never hire a car again. She picked us up and dropped us back to the airport, dropped us off and picked us up from our surf lessons every day (via the local supermarkets as required!). She also drove us the hour to Peniche beach and then waited until after our lessons to drive us home again. A very relaxing and stress free alternative to car hire (and it cost us less to use taxis than it would to have hired a car)! All-in-all, another fantastic, relaxed holiday.
Nicky, thanks again for all of your help organising our 2011 trip! I’m certain we’ll be in touch with you before too long about organising our 2012 trip! -

It’s finally time for the European section of the ASP’s world championship tour (WCT) to get underway, starting with the Quiksilver Pro France. Running from 4th to 13th October, the Landes coast of France looks set to pummeled by the Autumn swells, and the fins of the best surfers in the world.
After visiting Australia, Brazil, South Africa, French Polynesia, and the USA, the WCT is making its way to Europe for event number 8 of 11. The final four events are going to decide who is going to walk away with a world title, and it’s a close race at the moment.

The Quiksilver Pro has been taking place for the past decade, ever since Quiksilver decided to run a contest on the doorstep of their St Jean de Luz offices in South West France. The golden sand beaches, barreling waves, and warm weather begged for an event, and since its inception,
Hossegor has won the coveted prize as the site for the event. The town is geared up for the contest, what with the masses of surf shops, the relaxed beach bars, and the wild parties at night... all before we even mention the delicious French food.

Quiksilver make a point of making a party of the contest, with lots of bands, live music and even other action sports being given free reign during the course of the event. Expect to see lots of entertainment if you make it over to the event. However, if you are only dreaming of a
surf holiday at the moment, watch the surfers battle it out in the water by watching online at
http://quiksilverlive.com/profrance2011/home.en.html

This year everyone will be waiting to see how x10 world champion Kelly Slater will fare. France is never Slater’s strongest contest, and in recent years it has been the Aussies who’ve done well. Last year saw x2 world champion Mick Fanning take the title, and this year he is hovering in the ratings at number 7 and very hungry for his first win of the year.
Other strong contenders to watch will be Aussie Owen Wright, who’s come up against Slater in the last three finals and managed to win one from Slater; Joel Parkinson, who’s unbelievably still not won a world title; and Josh Kerr, who’s recently found brilliant form since his 3rd place finish in Tahiti.
It’s anyone’s to win in France and everyone but Slater wants to knock Slater from his perch at the top of the WCT rankings. Get ready to see some fireworks.

In the glassy reflective waters of Trestles, California, the Hurley Pro 2011 came to a dramatic end on 22nd September. Living legend Kelly Slater (USA) clinched the ASP’s Hurley Pro title for a 5th time by defeating his up and coming surf nemesis Owen Wright (AUS) in a highly contested final.

The score line read 17.50 to 16.74 in favour of Slater in the final. The 4 waves that made up the score, all were posted in the final mintues of the heat, as Slater and Wright used their priority outback to attempt to best each other. As Wright sprung yet another massive aerial maneuver, Slater would answer back with a fluid sequence of cutbacks, hacks, 360 turns and even an aerial to boot. There is a reason why the last 3 ASP world championship tour (WCT) finals have been between Slater and Wright... they are both at their peak performance levels.

Slater is leading the battle between Wright and he, as they occupy spots number 1 and 2 in the world rankings. The danger now is that Slater is starting to pull away from the pack, and could be set to win yet another world title. If the Floridian pulls it off, Slater will go down in the record books as holder of 11 WCT titles. Not bad for a 39 year old. However, even though people have started to write his name as Ke11y, Wright, along with his compatriots of Joel Parkinson, Josh Kerr, Taj Burrow and Mick Fanning, will all be pushing hard to derail Slaters end of year surge over the next couple of months.
The Hurley Pro maybe be over, but stop number 8 of the dreamtour is about to kick off very soon. The Quiksilver Pro France will be held at
Hossegor, the infamous French town that boasts one of the best waves in Europe- La Gravière. The contest is set to run from 4th to 13th October.
However, whilst you’re waiting for things to get going over in France, here’s how the final day of the Hurley Pro went down...

Famed surf spot of
Bundoran, Ireland is the location for the European Surf Championships this year. The event is set to start this coming weekend, running from 23rd September until 2nd October, and will see 15 countries competing against each other in the Atlantic waves.
The event has been running since 1970 when it started in Jersey. Since its beginning the title has been passed between England, Spain, Portugal and France, who are the current title holders. The venue for the last Euro championships was in the Channel Islands in 2009, however Bundoran is no stranger to the contest. Our Irish surf town has held the event back in 1997 and 1985, however it has yet to see the Irish team take the win.
Every year the event alternates between the ‘seniors’ and the ‘juniors’. This year it’s the seniors chance to show Europe how it’s done, and a chance for the European surfers to make a mark for their country. Each country is able to bring up to 13 surfers to compete, and 2 judges to help out with the scoring. It’s a great chance for a lot of up and coming surfers to hone their competitive skills and get noticed in the surf media.

When it comes to our Irish team, watch out for Easkey Britton from County Donegal. She has not only won the Irish National Surfing Championships 4 times, the British Pro Tour Championship twice, but has been nominated for a Billabong XXL award for her big wave riding skills. Watch out for Britton’s moves at the infamous ‘The Peak’ surf break, which is one of the best waves in Europe. The A-frame reef break wave provides superb tubes and faces on which to perform maneuvers. So it’s going to see its fair share of aerial and hack attacks in the coming week.
