The hotel was perfect - great location, easy access to everywhere. Beach was so long - so many places to surf and great for long walks. Town was very Basque and different to anywhere else I've been. Lanbroa is great for breakfasts. Pukas again were a great help. We did the stand up paddle(SUP) pilates classes as you recommended and they were brill. Really enjoyable after a day on the beach and great fun too. Lovely walk over to Getaria to get there too. All in all, a brill holiday. This place is really a nice little place and very local. For once you go to a place where English is not spoken widely. Beach and Town very good and good food, especially the ice cream. Surfing was good for a non pro.Also spent an afternoon in San Sebastian, very lovely place. Will definitely be back another time, the Hotel was also good - Henrik, Church Crookham, Hampshire

Zarautz is a fantastic place for chilling out and surfing on a beautiful beach. The beach was huge and hotel zarautz is in the perfect location to take advantage of it. The hotel is approx 70 metres away from the beach, it is nice but we only really used it for sleeping and showering (and the odd siesta). The reception staff speak good english and are happy to help you with any questions about the town. As a bed and breakfast it's perfect as its cheap and there are plenty of nice breakfast spots nearby to kick off your day. If you have surf gear you can bring it into the hotel, they're not fussy in that way. The beach is across the road, it's huge and there's always a few waves to catch somewhere along it's length. it's a really nice beach to walk as well when the tide is out as it's nice and flat and there are pleasant nice views over the headlands. As a beach break it is perfect, loads of room so you can find a few waves where it isn't crowded and nothing to worry about during frequent wipe-outs!- Joe, Dublin

Hotel zarautz is in a great location to take advantage of the walk along the sea wall to Getaria. it's about 40 minutes and is a great way to chill out at the end of the day, or work up an appetite if you've taken a siesta. you can also fit in a class of ocean pilates or 30 minutes doing SUP (stand up paddle) while you're there. there are also plenty of restaurants and bars there to reward you upon arrival. the walk back is great too if you can time it right and catch a sunset across the ocean. overall zarautz is a great place for relaxing and there's plenty of reasons to go play in the ocean and take advantage of one of Europe's nicest beaches.

3 Star hotel that should be more. Great location, close to the old town and across from the beach. Pixos in the restaurants are good fun to pick and choose from. The area is very different from southern Spain, spent a day in San Sebastian aswell and loved it, Thanks - Carol, Ireland

Zarautz Surf Lessons

We have teamed up with Spain's Number 1 Surf Company Pukas and offer Surf Lessons with their surf school. All teachers are fluent Spanish and English speakers. Pukas have been making surf boards since the late 70s and have been offering surf lessons for over 20 years in San Sebastian and Zarautz. World Champion Sunny Garcia and Portuguese Champion Tiago Pires use Pukas boards today.

Pukas have a very large selection of boards - Minimals, Longboards, Shortboards & Bodyboards

Pukas Surf School is officially licensed by the Spanish Surf Federation (FES) with fully qualified instructors and follows all safety standards.

Modern showers, changing rooms and lockers are available at the surf school.

SUP Pilates

In July & August we will be offering SUP Pilates. Please contact us and we can add the SUP Pilates. Each person paddles out on a Stand Up Paddle (SUP) board in the calm waters of Getaria bay, 3kms from Zarautz, and spend the afternoon doing Pilates out on the board in the Ocean!

The boards are 10 foot long and because you are out balancing on the water it makes the course all the more effective, unique and fun,

Zarautz Surf

Zarautz is Spain's foremost Surf town - its beach is 2.5km of highly consistent surf offering many different peaks for all standards of surfers. The town is a great place to learn how to surf and has been home to many of Spain's Champion surfers including Aritz Arinburu.

Every September it hosts an ASP WQS surf event with all the world's top Pro's out competing for the title.

A few kms East towards San Sebastian you'll find Orio - a very nice beachbreak in beautiful surroundings.

Further East is San Sebastian and it's city surf beach La Zurriola. Biarritz, France is 70 kms away. Hossegor & Capbreton are a bit further, 90kms away, and great for a day trip.

West of Zarautz you will find many surf breaks including the World Famous Mundaka, and Menakoz, Zamaia & Laga. A surfer's paradise - Come Surf Europe with us!

Zarautz is part of the Basque Country in North Spain. It is 20kms from San Sebastian, 85kms from Bilbao and 65kms from Biarritz.

San Sebastian has a small domestic airport so the best airport to use is Biarritz or Bilbao. Both cities are very well connected to Zarautz via Train or Bus.

From Biarritz Airport

Biarritz is a very convenient airport to get to Zarautz. It is only 70kms away (30 minute drive) in South West France. www.ryanair.com

Bus
You can get the bus from Biarritz to San Sebastian. It takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes. www.pesa.net has a bus line from Biarritz to San Sebastian. The departure stop is in Biarritz city centre, next to the Local Tourist Office. Take a taxi or a bus (Line Number 6) from Biarritz Airport to the Biarritz Local Tourist Office bus stop. It will take 15 minutes. From there get the bus to San Sebastian. Once you arrive in San Sebastian you can get a connecting bus or a train (both take 20-30 mins) for a few Euro that takes you to Zarautz.

From Bilbao Airport

Bus
You can get a bus from Bilbao Airport to San Sebastian. The below bus takes just over an hour and drops you in to the centre of San Sebastian:

Once you arrive in San Sebastian you can get a connecting bus or a train (both take 20-30 mins) for a few Euro on to Zarautz.

Car Hire

Alternatively hire a car from the airport - all the major rental companies have a presence in both airports

The road infrastructure in North Spain is one of the best in Europe - each city is linked by a 3/4 lane motorway - with very clear marked signs for Zarautz. There are toll roads - make sure you go through and pay. The France/Spain boarder crossing is a simple toll. A car is not essential as all accommodation is close to Zarautz's main beach.

Zarautz is famous as Spain's main surf town and home to some of Spain's most consistent surf. It is a true Basque town and is an entirely different part of Spain than the southern coast of the country. Gastronamy plays an important role in the town which houses one of the leading culinary schools in Spain. This also means that the town has many restaurants, offering both modern and traditional Basque dishes.

The Town

It is the longest beach in the Basque Country - with 2.5km's of surf it will be hard to make time for anything else... The town's promenade runs the length of the beach and is a perfect place to hang out, have some lunch, shop in the market stalls, sunbath & enjoy the summer beach vibe.

The promenade has many public facilities to enjoy - skate board area, basketball courts, bicycle lanes and table tennis courts. When evening draws in the bars and restaurants will start to fill - DJs, musicians and street performers will perform along the promenade and the whole town will begin to party. A few streets back from the beach is the charming old Historic quarter - with a square filled with cafes, bars and restaurants - and many streets to be explored with intriguing shops and building.

On the east side of town is the Real Golf Club de Zarautz. It is a links course opened in 1916 and one of Spains oldest and most picturesque courses.

Further Afield

The spectacular provincial capital of San Sebastian is less than 20kms away - a day trip is essential with easy access by train and bus. There are many beautiful beaches and delightful old towns along the coast that are worth exploring as much for surf as for their character and charm...Orio and Zumaia are ones to note.

A few Kms west of the town is Getaria, a lovely fishing town with a very picturesque peninsula - the village dates back to medieval times with many historic buildings - nice place for an afternoon. Bilbao is 90kms West - visit the Guggenheim and the Capital of the Basque Country.
